I was invited to see the opening of The Shard as a guest of The Tower Hotel . Sitting at an outside table of the Brasserie and watching the sun go down, the lights come on, and sipping a nice glass of wine was definitely the way to do it.
People started to gather for the event in a very friendly and social manner, taking drinks from the Brasserie and watching the river from the terrace.
The lasers started at 10pm and flashed across the city highlighting the main building in London. However from the ground, all we could see was thin green lines of light moving about. The side of the building was then lit up in changing colours as the green light roamed around. This then continued on in a cyclical pattern.
By 11.30pm, as people started to walk home, there was a general feeling of disappointment. Everyone expected a bit more of a bang, and fireworks. The clinical straightness of lasers, whilst technically impressive still doesn’t match the delight and shared ‘wows’ that fireworks can do.
