As cider becomes more popular, the major beer and lager producers are entering the market, and now Carling have launched their Carling British Cider. It is lightly packaged, looking very light, fresh and easy drinking. It is in a clear bottle that shows it light golden straw colour, which when poured has a short lived coarse foam that disappears to leave only the faintest hint of further bubbles being produced. It has only the slightest aroma of apple and sugar. Initial taste is sweet and bright, very clean and uplifting but the flavour is very light on apple, the initial weak taste of summer apple drowned out by the processed sweetness. Swirling in the mouth gives a bit more smoothness to the apple, but the overarching sweetness distracts from the flavour. The finish is refreshing but short lived, just as if you had downed a soda. Carling British Cider may be OK on a hot summers day, but it lacks any real cider taste to get existing cider drinkers to want it, so seems aimed and new drinkers wanting something different from their regular beer but want to stay ‘on brand’. |
